CII stands for Carbon Intensity Indicator.
It's a measure used in the maritime industry to indicate the
efficiency of a ship in terms of how much carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) she emits relative to the cargo carrying
capacity and the distance traveled. In simpler terms, CII is a metric that assesses the carbon footprint of
a ship's operational capacity.
How is CII Calculated?
CII is an annual cumulative calculation method.
The calculation of CII takes into account the following
factors:
•CO2 Emissions are the total emissions of the ship over a period of time, measured in tonnes CO2 per tonne fuel.
•DWT (Deadweight Tonnage) represents the ship's carrying capacity, essentially the weight (in tonnes) that a ship can safely carry.
•Distance Sailed is the total distance the ship has traveled over the same period, measured in nautical miles.
The formula for CII is generally expressed as: Emitted CO2 Emissions / (DWT * Distance Sailed)
What is CII Rating?
After calculating CII, ships fall into rating limits and ships performance is determined. These ratings starts from A best, to E worst. The limits are determined by the formulation given by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and uses constat parameters with ships’ DWT. The figure shows how rating boundaries look like for a ship.
For ships that has a D rating three years in a row or one E rating, SEEMP III must be revised with corrective action plans and verified by class. Required annual operation CII values for each ship is given below. Ships attaining these values fall right int o the middle of C rating. Up until 2026, the required CII values are getting lower, meaning ships must perform better each year to keep up with the regulation.
